Tranquility Amid Chaos (John 14:27)

Jesus said, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid.”
In John 14:27, Jesus promised his disciples lasting, inward, and spiritual tranquility independent of external circumstances. Unlike worldly peace, which is fragile, temporary, and dependent on comfort, Jesus’ peace is a divine gift rooted in trust in God’s control, offering security even amid suffering and chaos. Following his promise of peace, he told the disciples, “Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”
For many people today, fear is a dominant emotion. In 2026, fear is driven by intense geopolitical conflicts, economic uncertainty, and rapid technological disruption. Key worries include high inflation, unemployment, global conflict, and climate disasters, alongside personal anxieties about safety, health, and maintaining control in a volatile world.
There are many ways we, as modern-day disciples, can overcome fear. First, we can actively shift our focus from worldly worries to God’s promises through prayer and study of the Word. Next, we can develop a personal relationship with God, fostering a “peace that passes all understanding” (Phil 4:7). Finally, we can actively resist the temptation to be “troubled” by trusting that we can face a chaotic world with confidence because we possess a spiritual calm that is “out of this world.”
