The Mosaic of Truth (John 8:31-32)

Jesus said to the people who believed in him, “You are truly my disciples if you remain faithful to my teachings. And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

Truth takes shape in bits and glimpses. When each person’s unique brand of truth is placed side by side with others’ insights, they form a kind of beautifully broken mosaic of opinions and perspectives. No one shard alone holds more weight or veracity than its neighbors. The coherence and beauty of the work must be tested and refined in the fire of scrutiny. According to Richard Rohr, untested truth is little more than ego that could easily morph into that which is “absolute” and “only” (Richard Rohr, 2019).

In the face of diversity and variability, modern-day disciples must continue seeking Truth in our divided, broken world. Even so, there has to be some sort of metric, some plumb line. In John 8:32, Jesus said that true disciples will remain faithful to his teachings. They will continually test the world’s fragmented insights against the Word of God. In doing so, they will know the truth, and the truth will make them free.
