The Law of Love (Matthew 5:43-44)

In our world, where the lines between friends and foes are blurred, today’s scripture is timely. In today’s text, Jesus delivers a series of lessons regarding righteous living and true discipleship. Beginning in 5:44, Jesus describes a new type of love that goes beyond a by-the-letter interpretation of Mosaic Law. He directs his listeners to not only love their enemies, but also bless those who curse them, do good to those who hate them, and pray for those who spitefully use them and persecute them.

The Law of Love, as Jesus frames it in Matthew 5:43–48, calls us beyond mere rule‑following (“the letter”) into a radical, active benevolence that seeks the good of even our enemies (“the spirit”). Living this way is transformative because it breaks the cycle of retaliation and resentment, replacing fear with genuine compassion. The kind of love Jesus teaches about reshapes relationships, communities, and ultimately the self from the inside out. I submit to you that the Law of Love makes us want to love our neighbors as well as our enemies.

If we infer from Jesus’ message that love extends to all people, the whole structure of “neighbor” as opposed to “enemy” is dismantled. Instead of allies and foes, we’re simply left with human beings, all of whom are children of the Most High God, trying to live together in community.
