Take Heart (Mark 10:49-50)

Jesus stood still and said, “Call him here.” And they called the blind man, saying to him, “Take heart; get up, he is calling you.” So, throwing off his cloak, he sprang up and came to Jesus.

When I looked up the meaning of “take heart” in the text, I discovered that it conveys courage, confidence, and optimism. Put another way, taking heart means seeing more than meets the naked eye.

Yolanda Adams calls it “sight beyond what I see.” Stevie Wonder calls it “inner vision.” The Apostle Paul refers to it as seeing a thing through the “eyes of your heart.” When you look at a thing through the eyes of the heart, the big picture starts to focus. You see both the dark clouds and the silver linings behind them.

You see injustice in the high places, but you also see Jesus turning over tables in the temple.

You see people from different tribes and skin tones and hair textures, but you also see beneath the surface the familiar Spirit, the common humanity that unites them all. In other words, when you look at things through the eyes of your heart, you begin to see not only the problems but also the possibilities.

Scripture tells us that Jesus said, blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. When you see with the eyes of your heart, the God in you will begin to see the God in other people.
