Focus Scripture – Matthew 13:45-46
When you get to the Kingdom and start looking for the treasure, you’ll notice many pearls to choose from. There are a lot of counterfeits out there: There are cultured pearls and imitation pearls. But only natural pearls are the ones with great value. How will you recognize the Pearl of Great Price?
Sometimes you have to hold it up to the light. Look beneath the surface. Turn it over and test it out. You see, not all the pearls you find are going to pass the test.
The pearl you are looking for may be different from somebody else’s pearl. God knows what you need, and God’s got the pearl that’s tailor-made for you.
You’ll know you have the right pearl because finding it will feel like you are resting in the eye of the storm, as described in Philippians 4:7. It’s the kind of pearl that gives you the peace of God that surpasses all understanding, the type of peace that guards your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus even as turmoil rages all around you.
You’ll know the right pearl when you see it because “Like recognizes like.”
Richard Rohr put it this way: “It’s Christ in you that recognizes Christ. It’s the Holy Spirit, whose temple you are (see 1 Corinthians 3:16), that responds to the Holy Spirit. Like recognizes like. That’s why all true cognition is the recognition (“re-cognition” or knowing something again). Only so far as you have surrendered to Christ and allowed the Christ in you to come to fullness can you love Christ. It’s Christ in you that recognizes and loves Christ.
Remember that if you’re good, you can see the good in others. If it’s wholesome, it does not cause disquiet in your spirit. If it’s true, it will rise to the top and stand the test of time. If the light dwells within you, you can recognize the light in others. The Pearl of Great Price is Jesus Christ. You will know him when you see him.
