From the Secret Place: Praying through the Pandemic

Dear Siblings in Christ,

During this COVID-19 pandemic, have you ever felt overwhelmed? Have the portents of gloom weighed heavily on your spirit? Sometimes it’s enough to make our souls ache. No doubt, even the strongest among us need to get away from the bad news on occasion. I’d like to suggest a remedy that works for me.

When my soul feels disquieted, I turn to prayer. I follow Jesus’s example of stealing away to a secret place, a quiet place for prayer and renewal. I embrace the comforting words of scripture and empty my soul before the Lord.

Frequently these days, Psalm 91 captures my thoughts: “He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty (Psalm 91:1). In that secret place, we can find refuge from the things that deplete us emotionally during this stressful time. We can find comfort and peace beneath the shadow of God’s wings.

I invite you to join me in prayer. Every day I will post a prayer I have already lifted up to our God. I hope that you will find comfort in these petitions. More than that, I know beyond the shadow of a doubt that God hears our prayers and answers. Scripture tells us the effective, fervent prayers of a righteous person avails much (James 5:16). It also tells us that we should be anxious for nothing. “But in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:6-7).

We will pray our way through this pandemic. And, in doing so, together we will endure to the end of it.

Many blessings and peace.
