Human beings are composed of the same chemical elements found on Earth, in the oceans, and in the atmosphere, primarily oxygen, carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, calcium, and phosphorus. These elements function together to achieve specific purposes. Thus, humans are not collections of random, isolated elements. Rather, human beings are created in the image of God to fulfill the purpose of living in relationship with God, with one another, and with creation.
The imago Dei (image of God) is a dynamic calling. Because of this sacred identity, humans possess inherent dignity and qualities such as reason, morality, creativity, and the capacity for relationships that reflect a Divine nature. Moreover, humanity has the capacity for both good and evil.
Therefore, human beings have a choice. They can be servants of their willfulness and hubris, or they can choose to reflect God’s nature and image by participating in God’s synergistic work of making wholes greater than their individual parts. They can become participants in God’s creative work by surrendering to God’s Divine will. When their stem-cell faith surrenders to the will of a limitless God, anything is possible by Grace.
