Communicating Across Cultures – Focus Scripture: Proverbs 12:18

Many interpersonal problems are the result of faulty communication. Scripture says, “some people make cutting remarks, but the words of the wise bring healing.” Too often, we don’t realize our words are hurting others, especially when we try to communicate across social, racial, and cultural lines. In such cases, we may need to put our beliefs on hold temporarily and give consideration to differing points of view.

As an act of selflessness, we may need to allow ourselves to be vulnerable long enough to let the realities of others enter into our consciousness. Only when this happens can there be a real meeting of the minds and a touching of the Godly spirits within each of us. Only when this happens are we truly hearing, seeing, and “feeling” each other as children of the Most High God.

Prayer

Listening God, help me to know the hearts and minds of my brothers and sisters so that I will communicate with them with sensitivity. Help me to see your image in everyone. Amen.
