45 “Again, the Kingdom of Heaven is like a merchant on the lookout for choice pearls. 46 When he discovered a pearl of great value, he sold everything he owned and bought it!
What if I told you that a precious pearl is waiting for you in the Kingdom of Heaven? “Okay,” you might say. “I’m ready to go. Point me in the right direction.” Not so fast! A little prep work is in order. First, you have to have a plan for your trip. You want to be intentional about your search. You want to put your heart and soul into the quest so that when you discover this treasure, you can rest assured that you have obtained something of great value. Keep in mind, there won’t be a lot of roadmaps along the way.
You’re probably asking, “How will I recognize the Pearl of Great Price?” You know, there are a lot of counterfeits out there: There are cultured pearls and imitation pearls. But only natural pearls are the ones with great value. Sometimes you have to hold them up to the light. Look beneath the surface. Turn them over and test them out. Not all the pearls you find are going to pass the test. But keep looking. You’ll know the right pearl when you see it because “Like recognizes like.”
Richard Rohr put it this way: “It’s Christ in you that recognizes Christ. It’s the Holy Spirit, whose temple you are (see 1 Corinthians 3:16), that responds to the Holy Spirit. Like recognizes like. That’s why all true cognition is really recognition (“re-cognition” or knowing something again).” It’s Christ in you that recognizes and loves the Christ in others. Keep searching for the pearl. You’ll know it when you see it.
